The location is on Chatham Island, which is connected to Port Blair by a 100-meter bridge. It is both the biggest and one of the oldest saw mills in Asia. It was founded in 1883 to satisfy the local demand for lumber for construction projects. The Forest Department is in charge of maintaining the area. To fulfill the increasing demand for timber, the facility is still operating at full capacity. It is a popular tourist destination and a wonderful place to learn about the many types of timber and how they are handled. To witness the vehicle ferry boat that transports vehicles and persons back and forth, which is the lifeline of Bambooflat Island, one could walk a short distance to Chatham Jetty.
The best way to get there is to take an auto rickshaw or a taxi or a rented 2-wheeler or even private buses that run all day long. One could also take advantage of special tourist buses known as Go-Go, which are provided by the local administration.
The place is open to the public from Monday to Friday from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm and on Saturday from 08:30 am to 02:30 pm (Sunday closed).
